Director of Student Health Services

Job Summary

Program development and management, which includes planning, integrating, facilitating, coordinating, and evaluating human, material, and fiscal resources required to provide excellent healthcare to the community in a boarding school environment. This includes leadership in establishing policies, ensuring standards, goals, and educational programs. Ensures proper direction of professional practice and nurse competence. The Director maintains student healthcare standards, quality control, and payment compliance for student medical bills.

The Director of Student Health Services reports directly to the Head of School.

Responsibilities and Duties

Assures excellent health care for the boarding school community.

  • Provides direct care to students:
      • Assesses, evaluates, documents, triages, diagnoses (nursing) and provides care for acute illness and injury.
      • Helps to transport students as needed.
      • Educates students about communicable diseases, nutritional concerns, safety, medications and other timely concerns.
      • Assures student immunizations are up to date.
      • Attends student of concern meetings when appropriate.

  • Provides for other health needs:
      • Educates faculty about communicable diseases, safety, and any other timely concerns.
      • Supervises faculty and residential life staff to whom medication administration has been delegated.
      • Assures review and maintenance of health reports and records.
      • Assures insurance claims are properly processed and serves as a liaison between physician office staff/physician and insurance companies.
      • Assures reportable incidents are sent to the proper authorities.
      • Coordinates effective communication among nurses at the Health Center, residential house team, students, parents, and administrators.
      • Displays knowledge of current health practices, best nursing practice for specific medical conditions, injury prevention and management.
      • Helps nursing staff to develop individual care plans for students.
      • Writes, reviews, and revises Health Center policies, procedures, standing orders, treatment protocols, and student enrollment forms. Reviews these at least annually with Medical Advisor.
      • Assures compliance with all student health policies and assures quality control standards.
      • Researches new health care products.
      • Maintains all AEDs and epinephrine pens on campus.
      • Creates an environment that promotes health and enhances learning.
      • Maintains close communication with all parents.

  • Assures an effective system for the management of human resources
    • Determines and evaluates HR needs for the student health program. Performs the following functions, assuring that boarding school guidelines/standards have been met.
        • Interviewing
        • Hiring
        • Orienting
        • Supervising
        • Scheduling
        • Terminating
    • Maintains a system for evaluating staff performance in accordance with school nursing standards.
        • Develops and maintains criteria for staff performance.
        • Completes yearly (or more often, if necessary) appraisals of staff performance.
        • Serves as a resource to nursing staff.

  • Assures effective financial management
      • Develops and oversees the Health Center budget.
      • Coordinates ordering and maintaining supplies and equipment.
      • Facilitates, maintains, and evaluates cost containment activities.

  • Assumes Safety Officer Responsibilities
      • Chair, Safety Committee
      • Coordinates review and revision of Safety Manual each year.
      • Participates in planning and implementation of Emergency First Response on campus with Security Services.
      • Assures Academy compliance with OSHA standards
        • Staff education for entire faculty and staff each year.
        • New employee OSHA education.

  • Demonstrates personal accountability
      • Maintains and shared knowledge of clinical and managerial practice with staff
      • Participates in, and provides leadership to meetings, task forces and committees.
      • Directs and leads staff to focus on, and achieve student satisfaction
      • Demonstrates appropriate use of universal precautions and personal protective equipment.
      • Maintains current licensure, CPR/AED and First Aid instructor certification.
      • Adheres to code of professional ethics as stated in the North Carolina Nurse Practice Act and the National Association of School Nurses.

    1. Graduate of RN accredited educational program with Baccalaureate degree.
    2. A valid North Carolina Registered Nurse license.
    3. Demonstrated expertise in clinical specialty, preferably pediatrics/adolescent health.
    4. Advanced degree in Nursing or related discipline preferred.
    5. At least three years of managerial experience.
    6. Willingness and ability accept twenty-four-hour accountability.
    7. Willingness and ability to take “call”
    8. Excellent verbal and written communication skills.
